A List Written Room by Room

Instead of one long column, divide the sheet into the rooms where things get used: kitchen, bathroom, laundry, garage. Each item goes under the room it came from.

The reason is simple. A word on its own is easy to lose, while a word tied to a place is far easier to fetch back. When you try the list from memory before leaving, walk through the house in your head, room by room, and the items tend to come along with the rooms. Old orators used something like this to hold long speeches, placing each point along an imagined walk through a familiar building.

It also tells you where things went. Six items under the bathroom heading in one week usually means somebody had a cold, or company stayed over, and that small story makes the whole sheet easier to recall later.

Keep the headings in the same order every week, matching the order you would actually walk through the house. The steadier the frame, the less work the head has to do to fill it in.
